Before upgrading DaVinci Resolve to a new version, such as version 19 to 20, for example. You should be making a backup of your project libraries just in case something goes wrong. This is even more important if you still plan to use an older version of Davinci Resolve or are making major changes to projects. The reason for this is that once a project has been opened in a newer version of Davinci Resolve, you won't be able to open it in an older version anymore.

How to Backup All Your DaVinci Resolve Projects
As with all software where you have a lot of work saved or stored, it is a really, really good idea to have backups of your projects. Without backups, you risk losing everything with a single mistake or system failure, so follow the steps below to make a backup of your entire Davinci Resolve Project Library.
- Launch DaVinci Resolve. When it opens, you’ll land on the Project Library screen.
- In the top left-hand corner of the Project Library screen, click the Project Library icon. This will show your available libraries (previously referred to as databases)
- Find your local library in the list. Click the small information icon (i) next to it.
- Click Backup. Choose a location on your computer to save the backup. For example, you can select your desktop for quick access.
- Click Save. DaVinci Resolve will now create a backup of all your projects stored in that library.
Project and Library Compatibility
DaVinci Resolve version 20 does not upgrade the library itself, meaning you can downgrade to version 19 without needing to convert the entire library. However, individual projects are upgraded when opened in version 20.
If you open a project created in version 19, DaVinci Resolve will prompt you to upgrade it. Once upgraded, that project will not open in version 19. This is why backing up your library beforehand is important. Because if you need to edit the project again in an older version of Davinci, a project updated to Resolve 20
Back Up Individual Projects (Optional but Recommended)
To be extra cautious, you can also duplicate specific projects before upgrading them. This will allow you to have a version for the previous version and the latest version.

Select the project in the Project Library.

Press Control + C to copy and Control + V to paste.

A duplicate version will appear. You can upgrade and use this one, while keeping the original unchanged.
This way, one version remains compatible with Resolve 19, while the other can be safely upgraded for Resolve 20.
