How to Fix Steam No Licenses Error When Launching a Game

If you are trying to play a game on Steam but get the "No licenses" error message. It almost always means the problem is not with the game installation but instead with Steam not being able to check that the account currently signed in has a valid license to launch the game. Even if the game is installed, you'll still get the error message. Thankfully, there are a few quick and easy things to check to get the game/s working again.

How to Fix Steam No Licenses Error When Launching a Game

Before you do anything else, make sure that you are signed into the right account. If you are sharing your device with someone else or if you are using family sharing, this is really important as it might be throwing things out of sync.

• Open Steam and confirm the username displayed in the upper-right corner.
• Make sure it is the account that originally purchased or activated the game.
• Clear any Library search filters or hidden categories.
• Refresh the Library and look for the game again.
• Sign out of Steam and sign back in before testing the game.

Note: If you are using the Steam family sharing option, make sure it is still set up correctly.

Verify Game Files or reinstall

Find the game that is causing problems, then go to Properties > Installed Files > Verify Integrity. Wait for the process to complete and check to see if you can play the game again.

Check Steam Family Settings if the Game Was Shared

If you didn't buy the game yourself and you are accessing it through Steam Families, the game will still appear on your computer while Steam shows that no valid license exists. Games borrowed through Steam Families also remain installed even after access is blocked.

So check the following settings: Open Steam > Settings > Family and confirm your account still belongs to the expected Steam Family.

If there is an issue, the game/s owner should do the following:

• The game is still included in the shared library
• The title has not been removed from sharing
• Family sharing has not been disabled

After any changes are made, sign out of Steam and sign back in so the client refreshes your available licenses. Remember that some games include publisher restrictions, third-party launchers, or subscription requirements that Steam Families cannot bypass.

Check Your Purchase and License History

If Steam asks you to purchase a game that you already own, check that the license still exists on your account. This is super important if the game was:

• Purchased from a third-party retailer
• Received as a gift
• Activated with a CD key
• Refunded previously

There are a lot of terrible third parties selling Steam keys and codes. Steam will quite often purge dodgy keys and content, so it's possible you got caught up in a purge event.

• Open Account Details and select View Purchase History.
• Look for the game's purchase status. A completed purchase should appear normally, while refunded, declined, or cancelled purchases no longer provide access.
• Next, open View Licenses and Product Key Activations to confirm the game package is still attached to your account.

There are a few other things to check:

• If you redeemed a retail key, check that it was activated on the right Steam account.
• If the game was received as a gift, remember that gifts can be revoked if the original purchase is refunded or disputed.
• Also confirm that you own the correct edition.
• A standard edition license does not automatically include Deluxe or Complete Edition content. This shouldn't be an issue anyway, as Steam won't let you download any of that content.

Check Regional Restrictions and Subscription Status

Some Steam licenses depend on your account region or an active subscription. If your game came from another country or was purchased through a regional retailer, the license may not be valid in your current Store Country. This isn't all that common though.

• Open Account Details and check that your Store Country matches your current location.
• If the activation key or gift was region locked, Steam cannot bypass that restriction.

You should also check if the game requires an active subscription. Games that need recurring subscriptions stop working when the subscription expires, even though they remain installed on your device. So restart any subscriptions before attempting to launch the game again.
