How to Fix Vortex Can’t Find or Manage the Game

Vortex Mod Manager and Nexus Mods makes modding games fairly easy, but there are some issues you will find your self dealing with as a newbie modder. The main one being games not appearing in Vortex. Vortex Can't Find or Manage Game Reasons

Game not discovered: Vortex does not list the game at all, or prompts you to scan for supported games repeatedly without success.

You must run the game at least once: Vortex detects the launcher but refuses to manage the game because it cannot find required configuration files.

Game Shows as Unmanaged: The game appears in Vortex but is marked as unmanaged, preventing mod deployment.

Mods Install but Do Nothing In Game: Mods show as enabled in Vortex, but no changes appear when launching the game.

Why Aren't Games Detected in Vortex Mod Manager?

There are a ton of different reasons games don't pop up in Vortex.

Game Installed in a Non Default Location: Vortex primarily scans standard install paths used by Steam, GOG, and Microsoft Store. Custom library folders or moved installations may not be detected automatically.

Vortex detects games by scanning known install paths and validating key files such as executables and configuration folders. It also reads platform specific data from Steam, GOG Galaxy, or Xbox Game Pass. If any expected file or registry entry is missing, detection may fail.

Manually Setting a Game Location in Vortex

If automatic detection fails, you can set the game location manually.

• Open Vortex and go to Games.
• Find the correct game entry and select Manage.

• Browse to the folder containing the main game executable, not the launcher.

Check the exact edition you own by checking the store page and the executable name. Only install mods that explicitly match that edition. Steam, GOG, Epic, and Game Pass Differences

Steam and GOG installs are usually simple because Vortex can read their library data directly. Game Pass versions are more restrictive, with limited folder access and different file layouts. For Game Pass titles, always install Vortex on the same drive as the game and run it as administrator. Not all Game Pass games are going to work well with mods. They are almost always problematic.
