How to Fix YouTube Live Chat Not Loading

If you are trying to access the Live Chat option for a specific YouTube video but cannot get it to work because it loads a blank window with an infinitely spinning loading icon, this article will show you a few different things you can do to solve the problem. The same issue can also affect the transcript feature, so you can use these steps to fix that as well.

How to Fix YouTube Live Chat Not Loading

As with most problems like this there are quite a few different solutions you can try to fix it. So work your way through the steps below until one of them fixes the problem.

Check If the Stream Allows Live Chat

First check that the video you are trying to view the Live Chat for actually has live chat.

• Open another live stream on YouTube from a different creator
• Check if chat loads normally there
• Return to the original stream and look for restrictions:
  • “Made for Kids” streams have chat disabled
  • Some streams disable chat due to moderation settings
• If chat works elsewhere, the issue is stream-specific and cannot be fixed locally.

Disable Extensions That May Block Chat

For most people it will probably be an extension of some kind that is blocking the Live Chat window from working. So disable all of your extensions then:

• Refresh the live stream
• If chat appears:
• Re-enable extensions one by one
• Identify the extension causing the conflict
• Keep it disabled or adjust its settings for YouTube

Try a Different Browser

If you are still having issues after testing all of your extensions try another browser. From my experience I have more issues with this on Brave than any other browser for some reasons. Make sure you disable all extensions when you do try a new browser.

• Microsoft Edge
• Mozilla Firefox

If chat works elsewhere, the issue is configuration-related. If it fails across browsers and accounts, it is likely a temporary platform issue.

Change Settings in Brave Browser

If you use Brave, its Shields feature may interfere with chat.

• Open a YouTube live stream
• Click the Shields icon in the address bar
• Lower “Trackers & Ads” blocking for YouTube only
• Refresh the page

If this fixes the issue, keep a site-specific exception instead of lowering global protection.

Test in Private Mode and Clean Your Profile

Try using a Private Browsing window.

• Open the same stream in a private/incognito window
• Check if chat works

If it does work:

• Clear cache and site data for YouTube
• Sign out of your account, then sign back in
• Keep extensions disabled initially
• Re-enable extensions gradually after testing

Try Desktop Mode or the App on Mobile

Mobile browsers sometimes fail to load chat properly.

• Open the stream in your mobile browser
• Enable Desktop site
• Reload the page

If chat still doesn't work:

• Open the stream in the YouTube app

Use whichever option consistently loads chat on your device.
