How to Get Your Drafts Back on TikTok

Losing TikTok drafts sucks and it usually happens after logging out, switching phones, clearing storage, or reinstalling the app. This isn't the end of the world, but before you do anything else, it is super important to know how TikTok drafts actually work, because drafts aren't stored/saved to your account. Which makes the entire recovery process different to what you might be expecting.

TikTok Drafts Are Stored Locally

TikTok drafts are not stored like published videos. Most of the time, drafts are saved inside the app data on the device where they were created. Since they are stored locally it means recovery is possible but depends on a few things in order to work.

1. If you still have the original phone and app installation there's a good chance you can get your drafts back.
2. If you have uninstalled TikTok or cleared your phone there is no way to get your file back.

This is why people accidentally lose drafts permanently. They open TikTok on a new phone, see no drafts, then reinstall TikTok on the old phone and erase the last remaining local data. Before doing anything else:

• Do not uninstall TikTok.
• Do not clear app data.
• Do not factory reset the phone.
• Do not log out unless necessary.

Treat the original device as the only reliable source until you confirm the drafts are gone. If you do not have the original device or have uninstalled TikTok you content is gone.

How to Get Your Drafts Back on TikTok

The best way to recover TikTok drafts is always on the device that originally created the drafts.

• Open TikTok your phone and go to your profile.
• Tap the Drafts folder and check if the videos still appear.
• If you use multiple TikTok accounts, switch back to the account that created the drafts on that device.

Since drafts are linked to local app storage for a specific account on a specific phone. They do not transfer automatically to another device, even if you log into the same TikTok account.

If the drafts still appear:

• Open each draft to check that it loads correctly.
• Don't update or reinstall TikTok.
• Save the videos before trying anything else.

Check the Follow locations for Drafts

Search these locations before assuming the content is lost:

• Photos or Gallery
• Downloads folder
• TikTok private posts
• Cloud backups
• Recently deleted posts inside TikTok

If the video was posted and later deleted, go to:

Settings and Privacy > Activity center > Recently deleted

TikTok allows the recovery of deleted posts though it's not always a gaurantee. However, this does not restore true local drafts that disappeared with app data.

Save the Drafts

Once a draft opens successfully, you have a few options.

• Drafts can disappear unexpectedly after crashes, updates, storage issues, or app reinstalls.
• If TikTok gives you a Save or Download option, use it. This creates a copy in your Photos, Gallery, or local storage.
• The safest move is to export the content while it is still accessible. Upload Pivately if you have no other choice.

After exporting:

• Open the saved file and check it works
• Back it up to cloud storage if you are paranoid.
• Keep the original draft untouched until you know the backup actually works.

Post the Video Privately

Another safe option is posting the video with visibility set to "Only you." This will upload it to TikTok so that only you can see it. It will keep it safe so you can download it later. It's not the best option but it's better than nothing. Alternatively, you could just finish whatever you were doing in the draft and upload it as a fully finished video.
