How to Prevent Google Gemini AI from Accessing Your WhatsApp Chats and Media

As of June 7, 2025, Google's AI assistant Gemini has begun integrating with key Android apps, including WhatsApp, Phone, Messages, and Utilities. If Gemini is installed on your device, it will access and analyse your WhatsApp chats, calls, and media unless you manually opt out. What is Gemini AI, and why is it spying on me?

Google Gemini is an AI tool designed to replace Google Assistant by offering deep integration across Android services. While promoted as a productivity enhancer, it also functions as a data collection system that can read app content, including WhatsApp messages, unless access is restricted.

How to Prevent Google Gemini AI from Accessing Your WhatsApp Chats and Media

These steps apply only if you have installed the Gemini app on your Android device. If you have not installed it, no action is required. Just keep an eye out for future updates that may see it added to your device.

• Open the Google Gemini app on your phone.
• Tap the profile icon in the top right corner of the app.
• Go to the "Apps" section within the profile menu.
• Find WhatsApp in the list of connected apps and uncheck it.

Repeat this for any other apps you want to keep private, such as Messages or Phone. This breaks Gemini’s link to WhatsApp and prevents it from accessing your chats and media.

Optional: Turn Off Gemini App Activity

Disabling app access does not stop Gemini from temporarily storing usage data. It can retain data for up to 72 hours even with certain permissions disabled. To reduce this, do the following.

• Go to the profile menu in the Gemini app.
• Locate the "Gemini Apps Activity" toggle.
• Turn it off to prevent Gemini from storing and sending app activity data to Google.

You can also visit your Google account settings in a browser to delete stored Gemini interactions and manage other data controls.

How to Disable or Remove Gemini Completely

If you want to stop using Gemini entirely, you can disable or uninstall the app from your Android device.

• Go to Settings > Apps
• Find Gemini in the list
• Tap Disable or Uninstall (if the option is available)
