How to Edit Game Names in Your Steam Library (Steam Custom Sort List)

This new tab includes several new options designed to give you control over how your games are presented.

Steam Custom Sort Name

The most important addition is the "Custom Sort Name" field. This allows you to change how Steam sorts a specific game within your library. Previously, Steam sorted titles alphabetically based on their official names, which often caused series to be out of order due to inconsistent naming.

For example, the Battlefield series includes:

  • Battlefield 1942
  • Battlefield Vietnam
  • Battlefield 2
  • Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
  • Battlefield 2142
  • Battlefield: Bad Company
  • Battlefield Heroes
  • Battlefield 1943
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2
  • Battlefield 3
  • Battlefield 4
  • Battlefield Hardline
  • Battlefield 1
  • Battlefield V
  • Battlefield 2042
  • Battlefield 6

These titles do not naturally sort in an order most people will like. But with the new feature, you can assign each game a custom sort title to make your list look like this instead. Or any other order you want it to be in. This sort order is hidden though.

  • Battlefield 1
  • Battlefield 2
  • Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
  • Battlefield 3
  • Battlefield 4
  • Battlefield V
  • Battlefield 6
  • Battlefield 1942
  • Battlefield 1943
  • Battlefield 2042
  • Battlefield 2142
  • Battlefield: Bad Company
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2
  • Battlefield Hardline
  • Battlefield Heroes
  • Battlefield Vietnam

This allows you to manually define the correct chronological or preferred order of any series or collection. Since the custom sort name is invisible to the normal view, it only affects sorting and does not alter how the game appears in your library at first glance. This means you can now sort your games in any order you like, whether by release date, personal ranking, story chronology, or any other criteria you find useful. It takes a little experimenting to get the order that you want though.

Artwork Overrides

In addition to sorting titles, Steam now lets you override the following visual elements on a per-game basis:

  • Cover image (the default vertical image in library grid view)
  • Wide cover (used in horizontal banners and collection views)
  • Logo (the game's title graphic displayed in the library)
  • Background (the backdrop behind the game's details page)

To change any of these, click the appropriate “Change” button next to each asset and upload an image from your system. This gives you full control over how each game looks in your library, allowing you to fix inconsistent designs, apply fan art, or create a cohesive visual theme across a series. These changes are stored locally on your machine and only affect your personal Steam client. They do not alter anything for others who view your profile or game activity.
