Microsoft Teams has annoyingly become one of the most commonly used workplace communication tools. Which sucks because it is absolutely horrendous to use, there's always something broken that needs a fix. In this particular case the random disappearance of the Save this message option, which is no longer visible in the message overflow menu. This happens on both Teams desktop and the web version. While Microsoft still doesn't have a clue what's going on this article will show you a few things that should restore the option to Microsoft Teams.

Takeaways:

  1. Learn how to fix the Save Messages option missing in Microsoft Teams.
  2. Save messages option not in Teams app or web version any more?

How to Save Messages in Microsoft Teams: Fix Missing Save This Message Feature

If you believe Microsoft, their road map (ID 496369) says the Save Message feature was expected to reach general availability between late August and early September 2025. The official Microsoft 365 Roadmap and Message Center post (MC1104306) states that this feature is enabled by default and does not require any admin configuration. However, those dates have long since passed and the feature comes and goes randomly.

The official documentation has a ton of reasons and fixes but they are all garbage and don't really offer any reasonable real world explanation or solution.

Force a Client Update and Clear Cache

Even if the server-side feature is active, an outdated Teams client or corrupted cache can prevent the new menu option from appearing. Follow these steps to update and refresh Teams:

  • In the Teams desktop app, click on your profile and select Check for updates.
  • If the update does not resolve the issue, clear the Teams cache.
  • Restart Teams to force a fresh download of the latest interface components.

Test it With a Brand New User

Creating a test user helps determine whether the issue is tenant-wide or specific to individual user profiles.

  • Create a new test user in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
  • Sign in to Teams Web as this user.
  • Check if the Save this message option is available.
  • If it appears for the new user, the issue likely affects existing profiles or cached data.

Clean Install Microsoft Teams and Update Windows

Outside of these few steps the only other thing you can do is clean install Microsoft Teams on your computer. Make sure to go into Program files and delete all of the Microsoft Teams stuff that left behind as well. Once you have done that check if there are any Windows updates. If there are, update Windows, then restart and reinstall Teams on your computer. This should fix the problem.

If it doesn't Microsoft is still figuring out how to release their feature properly again... You're probably stuck waiting...
