How to Set Up Bazzite Couch Gaming on Linux KDE for Console-Like Gaming PC
Before we start, I just want to mention that some of the steps in this guide have full guides dedicated to them here. So check them out if you get stuck or just want to deep dive Bazzite.
Automatic login is the most important part of this process as it removes the need to enter your password at startup, which is a pain in the butt when you just want things to boot quickly.
- Open System Settings
- Go to the Login Screen
- Enable Automatically log in
- Select your user account
- Click Apply
- Enter your password when prompted
Configure KDE Wallet
KDE Wallet can prompt for passwords when accessing network connections or saved credentials. To avoid interruptions, it is configured to use a blank password.
- Open KWalletManager
- Click Open
- Select Change Password
- Leave the password field empty
- Confirm the change
This step reduces security but is appropriate for a dedicated couch gaming system.
Set Desktop Session to Empty
By default, KDE may restore previously opened applications. This can interfere with Steam launching properly.
- Open System Settings
- Search for Desktop Session
- Find On login, launch apps that were open
- Set it to Start with an empty session
- Click Apply
Disable Screen Locking
Screen locking is not suitable for a controller-only setup.
- Open System Settings
- Search for Screen Locking
- Set Lock screen automatically to Never
- Disable Lock after waking from sleep
- Click Apply
This ensures you do not need a keyboard to unlock the system.
Note: These settings are intended for a trusted, physical-access environment such as a living room gaming PC. They are not recommended for a primary workstation due to reduced security.
Optional Power Management Settings
You can further optimise the system for a console-like experience.
- Open System Settings
- Search for Power Management
Optional adjustments include:
- Setting automatic suspend when idle
- Adjusting screen dim and turn off timers
- Configuring battery limits on laptops
If you are using an older NVIDIA GPU, test suspend and resume behaviour carefully before enabling auto-suspend.
Configure Steam for Big Picture Mode
Steam will serve as the primary interface for gaming.
- Open Steam Settings
- Go to Interface
- Enable Start Steam in Big Picture Mode
Bazzite typically launches Steam automatically, so no additional autostart configuration is needed.
Optional performance setting:
- Enable or disable GPU-accelerated rendering in web views
- Enable for smoother performance on many systems
- Disable if you experience UI glitches on NVIDIA hardware
Enable Controller Overlay
This allows Steam features to be accessed directly from a controller.
- Open Steam Settings
- Go to In Game
- Enable Use Big Picture Overlay when using a controller
This enables Steam-style menus when pressing the controller guide button.
Test the Setup and see how you like it
Restart the system and verify the following:
- System logs in automatically
- No password prompts appear
- Desktop loads cleanly
- Steam starts in Big Picture Mode
- Controller guide button opens the Steam overlay
