Working with video usually also means you will have several audio sources to deal with. Your camera likely records basic reference sound while a separate recorder or microphone captures the real quality audio you want to use. Davinci Resolve has a reliable feature that can match these recordings for you. Instead of lining them up by hand, which can be a little tricky, follow along as we show you how to use Audio Auto Sync in Davinci Resolve.

When to Use Autosync Audio in Davinci Resolve

As long as both the camera audio and the external audio share similar waveforms, Resolve can align them automatically. The camera audio does not have to sound perfect. It only needs to capture the same spoken words or sounds so the software can match the wave shapes.

Autosync is most helpful when:

• You recorded sound separately from your camera
• You want to replace the camera audio with a cleaner source
• You have more than one clip that needs to be matched at the same time

Preparing Your Files

Before you begin, place all the related video and audio files together in one bin inside your project. For example, you might create a bin called Audio Sync. Add your camera clips to this bin as well as your high-quality audio recordings.

There is no need to pair them manually, one clip at a time. Resolve will search through every clip in the bin and attempt to match them based on their waveform patterns.

How to Sync Audio and Video in Davinci Resolve (Auto Sync)

Once all files are in the same bin, follow these steps:

• Select the bin, but do not select any individual clips inside it. The autosync feature works on everything contained in that bin when nothing is selected.
• Right-click inside the bin panel. A context menu will appear. Choose Auto Sync Audio by Waveform.

• A small window will appear asking how you want Resolve to apply the synced audio. You can leave the default settings. Click Sync.

• Resolve will now examine every video file and every audio file in the bin. It compares their waveforms and lines them up so that they play in time.

Confirming the Result

After the process finishes, drag one of your video clips to the timeline. Instead of hearing the original camera audio, you should now hear the improved external audio. Resolve automatically replaced the reference sound with the matching high-quality track.

If you open the clip in the inspector, you will see that the new audio is linked to the video. You can edit them together like any normal clip. There is no need for extra alignment on the timeline.

Better Results When Using Audio Sync in Davinci Resolve

• Ensure your external audio was recorded at the same event or moment. The sound must match visually recorded speech or actions.
• Keep camera audio turned on during recording, even if it is low quality. Without it, Resolve cannot compare waveforms.
• If a clip fails to sync, it may have too little sound detail for matching. In that case, you can try syncing manually by lining up wave peaks.
