Vortex Mods: Mods Install But Don’t Work in Game
As we mentioned in the introduction, there are a ton of different reasons why mods don't work in game. Sometimes they cause crashes, sometimes they don't. And sometimes nothing happens at all. A lot of the time the error message the mod shows will point you in the direction of a solution but if it doesn't, below are all the reasons why these things might be happening. Pay very close attention to the first one!
Wrong mod version or game version: Mods are created to match specific game versions and if the game is updated after the mod is created the mod usually breaks. So it is super important to pay attention to dates and game versions. Generally a good rule to follow is to check the last time a game was updated. Then check the last time the mod you want to use was updated. If the mod was updated after the game update it should be working.
Plugin not enabled in Plugins tab: Many mods include plugins such as ESP, ESM, or ESL files. Installing a mod does not always enable its plugin automatically. If the plugin is unchecked, the game will ignore the mod entirely.
Load order issues: Some mods must load before or after others to function correctly. An incorrect load order can prevent scripts, textures, or game records from applying as intended.
Missing requirements: Mods often depend on other mods, frameworks, or tools like script extenders. If a requirement is missing or outdated, the mod may silently fail.
Mods installed but not deployed: Vortex uses a deployment system to link mod files into the game directory. If deployment fails or has not been run, the mod files never reach the game.
Mods enabled but not active: The mod shows as enabled in the Mods tab, but the game behaves as if nothing changed.
No changes visible in game: Textures, weapons, UI elements, or gameplay features added by the mod do not appear.

Check Mod Requirements on Nexus Pages
A super important thing that a lot of newbies overlook are Mod Dependencies. These are requirements a lot of mods need to work. Usually they are a core mod that other mods use to function. Cyberpunk has a lot of mods like this that require you to download lots of dependencies. Vortex makes life easy as you are downloading mods by pointing out which dependencies you will need, showing you a link that will take you to each one.
So if you are install mods and nothing is happening, not even an error message it's probably because of a missing dependancy.

How Deployment Works
Deployment creates links from the Vortex staging folder to the actual game folder. If deployment is disabled, interrupted, or blocked by permissions, mods will appear installed but have no effect in game. Always check the notification bell for deployment errors. Vortex is pretty good at deploying things without isues, however if you are using different versions of the same mod you may get a pop up asking what you want to do.
For the most part chosing the latest mod version fixes issues. However rather than having to do this it's best to just uninstall older mod versions to save space and pop up drama.
Difference Between Mods and Plugins
In Vortex, a mod is a package of files. A plugin is a specific file that tells the game how to use those files. Not all mods have plugins, but any mod that changes gameplay usually does. Enabling a mod does not guarantee its plugin is active.
Enabling Plugins Properly
Open the Plugins tab and verify that the plugin checkbox is enabled. Use the sort function or automatic load order tools like LOOT if available. Pay attention to warnings about missing masters or incompatible files.
