22-Inch ARM All-in-One PC from ViewSonic Runs Android

We didn't really expect personal computers to so casually start using ARM chips, and the Android operating system instead of Microsoft's Windows, but ViewSonic is eager to help make that happen. What the company launched through its newest press release is a certain product called VSD22 Smart Display. A very deceptive name, to be sure. We say this because the 22-inch ViewSonic product is, in reality, an all-in-on desktop powered by the Texas Instruments OMAP 4 processor. “The VSD220 Smart Display is engineered for today's cloud connected world. ViewSonic is embracing the post-PC transition with what will be a full range of connected display solutions,” said Jeff Volpe, president of ViewSonic Americas. “For consumers, the VSD220 is perfect for surfing the web, engaging on social networks and enjoying a world of Android apps. For commercial opportunities, the VSD220 serves as a flexible solution that can address the needs of Android compatible vertical market applications such as signage, hospitality, point of information, and kiosk. Whatever the need, our new Smart Displays are the future of connected computing.” The VSD22 Smart Display pairs the OMAP 4 with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, eventually Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. There is Ethernet support as well, plus three USB ports, a 1.2-megapixel front camera, a microSD card slot and a micro-HDMI video input. That way, the all-in-one/smart display can act as a monitor/HDTV whenever it is required (the native resolution is, predictably, 1920 x 1080 pixels). Shipments will begin in October, in the United States, for the price of $399, or 311-399 Euro, depending on how relevant exchange rates turn out to be. “We are proud to see the leading capabilities of our OMAP 4 processor come to life on ViewSonic's new VSD220 Smart Display," said Ketan Malani, business development manager, OMAP platform business unit, TI.
