Though it probably sounds dumb, this issue is super common in modern games and controllers can and do cause lag and FPS drops. Typically, this happens because of low battery levels, but outdated firmware is also a major cause as the controller is constantly connecting and disconnecting so the game doesn't know what's going on. It is quite a common issue in Horizon Zero Dawn, Star Wars Fallen Order, and Forza 5. Before you start the steps below, just make sure that you have tried using brand-new batteries.

Manually Update Your Xbox Controller Firmware.

  • Install the Xbox Accessories app from the Microsoft Store.

  • Once installed, open the app and connect your controller using a USB cable.

  • If an update is available you will have the option to download it. If nothing appears you have the latest version available. Make sure you do not disconnect the controller during this period you don't want to brick your device. The update can take between 5 and 10 minutes so be prepared to wait.

  • After the update completes, close the app. Then, go to Settings > Devices, and remove your Xbox Controller from the list of devices. Restart your computer, reconnect your controller, and you should experience smoother gameplay without major FPS lag in your games. Restart your computer as well, then pair your controller with your computer again.
