How to Transfer Oblivion Remastered Saves Between Steam and Xbox Game Pass
If you have started playing Oblivion Remastered on Game Pass and now want to move to Steam or back the other way. This article will show you how to quickly and easily move your Oblivion Remastered Saves between Steam and Game Pass on PC. It's actually a lot easier than you probably think.
What You Need to Know
- Save files are stored locally on your PC.
- The process involves copying files between two specific folders.
- You need to launch the game at least once on both platforms to generate the required folders.
Important: As we are dealing with save files, make sure you make a copy of your saves from both the Steam and Game Pass folders. If you make a mistake or accidentally overwrite something, you will want to know that your original saves are still safe.
Locate Your Save Folders
Steam Save Folder
Now that you know roughly how this process is going to work, do the following.
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer and go to:
C:\Users\[YourUsername]\Documents\My Games\Oblivion Remastered\Saved\SaveGames
- Look for files named after your character or ending in .savv.
Xbox Game Pass Save Folder
- Press Windows + R, type %localappdata%, and press Enter. Now go to:
Packages\BethesdaSoftworks.ProjectAltter_<random_string>\SystemAppData\wgs
- Inside, you'll find one or more folders with long random names.
- Inside each folder are files, your Xbox saves are the larger ones (usually over 100 KB).
How to Transfer Oblivion Remastered Saves Between Steam and Xbox Game Pass
From Steam to Xbox Game Pass
- Launch the Xbox version of the game and make a save to generate the correct folder structure.
- Open the most recent wgs folder and copy the filename of the save file (something like 13B174123C...).
- Delete or move that file out of the folder.
- Copy your desired Steam save (.ess) into this folder.
- Rename it to match the original Xbox save filename exactly (no file extension).
- Click "Yes" if prompted to confirm the change of file type.
From Xbox Game Pass to Steam
- Launch the Steam version and make a quick save.
- Open your Steam save folder.
- Copy your Xbox save file (the largest one from the wgs folder) into the Steam folder.
- Rename it to match Steam’s naming format, e.g., CharacterName_0001.savv.
Test the Save File
- Launch the game on the platform you transferred the save to.
- From the main menu, choose Load Game.
- Your transferred save should appear.
- Load the file to verify your progress and character are intact.
Troubleshooting and Tips
Enable File Extensions
If renaming the files didn’t work or the extension looks wrong:
- In any folder, go to View > Show > File Name Extensions and Hidden Items.
- On Windows 10, find this in the ribbon at the top.
- Make sure both options are checked.
Naming Notes
- Steam save files end in .savv and usually include descriptive text.
- Xbox save files have no extension and consist of a random string of characters.
Once everything is renamed and in the correct place, your save should work seamlessly on the new platform.
