Unfortunately, it can be a little temperamental at engaging a search and updating, it's also the slowest method. Simply because Windows will ultimately be the one who decides when your system should get the update.
Thankfully you can trigger it manually, to do this, open the Settings menu by pressing the Windows Key + I. Here go to Updates & Security and click the Search for Updates option. Windows will now search for and download the latest available updates. The first updates Windows downloads and installs may not be the Fall Creators update so you may have to do this several times before you finally get the main Fall Creators patch. Which can be identified by the version number 1709.
Remember: Windows may block your attempts by saying 'no new updates are currently available'. If you see this message it means the servers are busy and you are being pushed back to a later time. You can try again at a later time or use one of the next two methods.

This is my preferred method as it's quick, easy to use and guarantees you get the download. To use the Update Wizard go to: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and click Update Now at the top of the page. This will download an executable program, which you will need to open. Once open follow the prompt given and Windows will download the Fall Creators Update.
Note: If you’d rather a fresh installation of the Fall Creators Update, the next method is going to be your desired option.
How to Update to Windows 10: Fall Creators (Version 1709) Using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
The third and final way to update to the Fall Creators Update version 1709 is to use the Windows Media Creation Tool. To use the Media Creation Tool go the following page: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and click on the ‘Create Windows 10 installation media’ option, the second option on the list. This will download an exe file which you will need to open.
Now all you need to do is follow the steps shown in the creation tool. There are two main options, Upgrade this PC now and Create Installation Media for Another PC.
Both will update your system to the latest version, however, the second is the full reinstall option. Whichever option you decide to use simply follow the prompt and wait for the process to complete. The only thing to note is that if you are using the second option, there is no version you need to specify. For example: Home or Pro, as the download will contain everything. All you need to do is make sure you have chosen either 32-bit or 64-bit.
Note: For some reason, whenever Windows 10 Updates to the Fall Creators Update, it will reset your system language to the original default. For Example: if your Installation media is Spanish and you are using an English Language pack, your system will restart in Spanish.
